I’ll Help you Find Insight, Growth, and Lasting Change

A joyful and peaceful inner life consists of passion and delight in relationships and work, respect and care for yourself, and mastery over your emotional world.

Loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, and confusion deplete your inner resources. Their pain can make you feel imprisoned.

I will collaborate with you in a non-judgmental, empathic, warm, and curious manner to help you meet your full potential. You will gain insight into your conflicts, identify your roles in them, recognize and free yourself from limiting patterns in your life, and achieve adaptive and practical everyday solutions.

I will help you feel empowered, rather than imprisoned, by your life.

Am I the Right Therapist for You?

I facilitate insight, growth, and lasting change in every treatment.

Specialties

My specialties are adult psychotherapy, adult psychoanalysis, child psychotherapy, child psychoanalysis, adolescent psychotherapy, and adolescent psychoanalysis.

I also work with parents through parental consults. And I am fully qualified and experienced as a supervisor for psychologists in training and any therapists looking for a consultation.

I am fluent in English and Hebrew, and can conduct sessions in either language.

I work with a wide range of mental health issues including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, trauma, and eating disorders.

Some of my areas of interest and specialty are gender identity issues, work inhibitions, marital and family, racial and ethnic diversity, developmental life span issues (e.g. young adult, midlife, relationship issues, parenthood), and grief and loss.

Experience

I have worked as a psychologist (since 2006) and psychoanalyst (since 2010), treating hundreds of children, adolescents, teens, and adults on issues including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, body image issues, trauma, relationship, identity, and work difficulties.

My therapy draws on deep understanding of, and experience in, a broad range of therapeutic theories and techniques across the spectrums of race, color, gender identity or expression, religion, sexual orientation, age, and national origin.

Additional experience in community mental health clinics, hospitals, group homes, and the Washington, D.C. Superior Courts have prepared me to offer psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to a diverse multiethnic and international population.

Training

My doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The George Washington University, and my pre- and postdoctoral work at the Karen Horney Clinic and other urban clinics, have exposed me to a broad range of psychological practices.

My postdoctoral training in child and adult psychoanalysis at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute (NYPSI) enriched my understanding of the complexity of the mind. This classical analytic training has provided me with deep insight into my clients’ symptoms and conflicts.

Is Virtual Psychology Right for You?

Video visits are highly effective and convenient.

As a telehealth practitioner since COVID began, I can speak to the power of an online psychological practice. For almost five years, my patients have participated in the therapeutic process from the comfort and privacy of their homes. Their treatment has shown the same effectiveness and outcomes as an in-person practice, in any frequency of treatment from one to four days per week.

You’ll save hours every week because you won’t need to travel to an office. You can schedule more flexibly because travel isn’t required. And you won’t have to worry about weather or illness disruptions.

I invite you to get in touch to discuss how I can help you find your way forward, wherever you are.

My Process

ADULT THERAPY

Our first several sessions are “intake meetings.” I will gain an understanding of the current circumstances of your life; you will learn how I think and work. During these meetings we will discuss fees and address any of your questions or concerns.

Once we embark upon a psychotherapeutic process we will establish regular meeting times. Treatment length, frequency, modality, and goals depend on your needs. My goal is always to provide the most appropriate treatment for you.

CHILD / ADOLESCENT / TEEN THERAPY

I meet with prospective parents one or two times to learn about the presenting problem, developmental history, and family context. I then meet with the young person three times for an intake, after which I meet the parents once more to provide observations and recommendations on treatment.

After treatment begins, I meet regularly with the parents to discuss progress, report on the nature of our work, and offer parental guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How much experience do you have in psychology and psychoanalysis?

I received a Psy.D. (a doctorate of applied clinical psychology) from George Washington University in 2003. I then completed my internship and postdoctoral studies at the world-renowned Karen Horney Clinic in New York City, and my psychoanalytic training at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute (NYPSI), the first psychoanalytic institute in the United States and a scholastic leader in psychoanalytic training.

I’m a faculty member, instructor, supervisor, and past Board member of NYPSI, a current Board member of the American Board of Psychoanalysis (ABPSA) and a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA) where I co-chair the Social Issues Department, chair a discussion group called “On Being Supervised,” and co-chair another discussion group called “The Psychodynamics and Psychological Impact of Misogyny” at national meetings.

I established my private practice in 2006 and have successfully treated hundreds of children, teens, and adults.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you’re considering therapy, you probably know on some level that it could help you.

You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of what’s next in your life. You might be feeling emotional pain because of problems in your work or relationships. You might just have a sense that something needs to change, without quite knowing what.

Conversely, you might have a preexisting mental health condition, such as longstanding depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or PTSD that requires attention and treatment.

Whatever the issue is, therapy provides a combination of insight and adaptive tool-building to help you identify what’s holding you back, and create space for inner clarity and health.

Will telehealth (or virtual) psychology work for me?

I’ve practiced telehealth since COVID began, so I’ve seen the power of virtual psychology. For almost five years, my patients have participated in the therapeutic process from the comfort and privacy of their homes. They’ve done away with the hassle of travel to my office, can schedule more flexibly because travel isn’t required, and don’t have to worry about weather or illness interruptions. Their treatment has shown the same effectiveness and outcomes as an in-person practice, in any frequency of treatment from one to four days per week.

What types of treatment do you offer?

I offer psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, tailored to your unique needs. My approach is effective, flexible, supportive, and grounded in many years of experience working with hundreds of children, teens, and adults.

How do I decide whether psychotherapy or psychoanalysis is best for me?

We will figure it out together! I work with you to understand your needs and decide which type of treatment will be most beneficial for you. And many people find they wish to change from one type to another in the course of their time with me.

If I start in psychotherapy, can I switch to psychoanalysis? (Or vice versa?)

Absolutely. Therapy is a flexible process, and many clients find that their needs evolve over time. We’ll work together to adjust the treatment to your needs.

How do virtual therapy sessions work?

Visits are conducted via a video conferencing platform called doxy.me that is HIPAA-compliant, reliable, and secure. It works on your phone, tablet, or computer. You’ll just need a quiet, private space and a reliable internet connection.

What should I expect during the first session?

Our first session is a chance to get to know each other. We’ll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, what you hope to achieve, and how I can support you. It’s also an opportunity to ask any questions about the process.

How should I prepare for my first session?

You don’t have to prepare anything. But if it helps, you’re welcome to jot down any concerns or questions you’d like to talk about so we can be sure to address them together. And if you’d like to get ahead of the game, click here for my intake forms.

What if I’ve never been to therapy before?

Many people feel nervous or unsure about starting therapy. During our first intake sessions, we’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy and what you’d like to achieve. There’s no pressure — you’ll set the pace and you’ll decide whether you’d like to continue with me.

What if I’m not comfortable talking about certain topics?

Therapy moves at your pace, and you’ll decide what you’re ready to discuss. Over time, we’ll build a space of trust where you feel safe exploring what’s on your mind.

What if I need emergency help between sessions?

I don’t provide emergency care, but if necessary I can help you plan for moments of distress by identifying resources and strategies. If you find yourself in crisis, your first call should be to emergency services or a crisis hotline. After that you should reach out to me so that I can do my best to support you.

Will anyone know I’m in therapy?

Your sessions are private and completely confidential. As a licensed therapist, I adhere to strict confidentiality laws and ethical guidelines. The only ways anyone would know you’re in therapy are if you tell them or if you give me permission to tell them.

How long does therapy take?

Each session lasts 45 minutes. The duration of our treatment is completely individualized and depends on your goals and needs. We’ll discuss this in our initial meetings.

How often will we meet?

Session frequency depends on your needs and preferences. I do not meet less than once per week, as we’d spend too much time catching up on everything that happened rather than delving into your treatment. Many clients meet once or twice weekly, while others choose the more in-depth work of psychoanalysis that requires three or four weekly sessions. Again, all of this will depend on your needs, goals, and interests, and we’ll discuss it in our initial sessions and adjust it if necessary as we work together.

What if I have a busy schedule?

One of the huge benefits of telehealth is its flexibility. You can fit therapy into your life without worrying about commutes or office visits.

What if I try therapy and it’s not for me?

Therapy is a deeply personal process, and it’s important to find the right fit. If you decide it’s not working and would like to continue with someone else, I’ll help you find another provider or resource that better meets your needs.

How will we communicate between sessions?

You can call, leave a voicemail, or e-mail me. You can review my document on contact methods for more details.

Can you conduct therapy in a language other than English?

I am fluent in English and Hebrew, so I can conduct sessions in either language.
